Climbing the Alps in the 1940’s

Scans from “Images D’Escalades,” a collection of mountaineering pictures covering climbs in the Alps – most of them were taken by André Roch, who was both a well respected climber and avalanche expert. I could not find any specific date for when it was published, but some years listed with a few of the climbs photographed indicate that it was likely released around 1946.

Which is why I’m rather eager to showcase the story of Nicholas Frirsz who’s a fifth generation luthier, someone who makes or repairs lutes and other string instruments. In this eight minute short film we get to hear of how he got involved in this family tradition.

Today is that day so I guess I shall begin by explaining that Robert is an influential Mentor, Patron of Arts and Pioneering Architect who was presented with the Cleveland Arts Prize as a Special Citation for Distinguished Service to his industry.

Of course as a fellow creative mind I have the upmost respect for the work that Robert has constructed throughout his career, however it’s the grit and determination embedded within his personality that I found most inspiring in this short film. You see, Robert was cutting his teeth in an age where African American Architects didn’t exist in America, he was in fact the first African American to be registered in his field within the state of Ohio.

In spite of all the resistance Robert came up against culturally at the time, he strived to craft a career he was immensely passionate about. For me the real icons in life are the ones that live to fulfil their dreams regardless of the adversity laying in their path, so in my eyes Robert is a bit of a legend in this sense. It’s quite humbling to come across stories like this, and I think it’s a reminder to all of us that the only way we can truly move forward in this world is if we give each other equal opportunity to succeed.

Cristiano Berto

Fashion designer who since 1985 has devoted himself to style and graphics merging them together. Since his beginnings his work philosophy was to experience the stylistic creation and the graphic project as indissolubly linked.

He is very keen on fashion in general, vintage clothing and antique objects and accessories. He collects military clothing both old and contemporary. In his collection there are some very rare items like uniforms dating back to the Normandy landings and new, modern prototypes made with cutting-edge technology and materials. There are even some surplus clothes he was given by special forces soldiers, which they customised and adapted to suit their needs.

This collection is a great source of never-ending inspiration to him and he has always used his archives as a starting point for his creations.

He describes himself as a "craftsman designer" and believes we must go back to our traditions and create with craft instruments following true and authentic ideas, trying to bring out the Made in Italy tradition. We must use pencil and paper, handcraft and above all culture and knowledge.

In the past Cristiano worked with important brands as a stylist and graphic designer. On several occasions his graphic ideas helped strengthen the product and at the same time his stylistic ideas gave his clients the opportunity to develop a bigger collection with new and creative items.

His main role in the fashion company has become more often that to bring "different points of view" highlighting new kind of products that were sometimes left out. Showing that every fashion company must always have the courage to explore new ways he proved this has always been the winning strategy.

Cristiano Berto works in his small workshop steeped in the quiet hills in the Treviso province, devoting himself to selected clients and some personal research projects.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native Aaron Hobson has turned everyone’s favourite voyeuristic map system into the basis of his photographic series ‘Cinemascapes’. Trawling the globe from the comfort of his laptop, he has scanned thousands of images to find that one shot to transform into something special.

Using photoshop and various other pieces of electronic wizardry – urban and surbubab, populated and unpopulated become cinematic scenes. Everything has a little sinister edge, Gregory Crewdson without the floating bodies, more at at Flavorwire.

I think when you appreciate well made objects with an individual twist you’re always going to be drawn to articles of the past. Particularly now the preference for many manufacturers is speed and low cost, it’s hard not to admire the chair thats been constructed in days and not minutes for example. So with this appreciation for product from the past I’ve brought across a short film from Toby Morris which follows Australian car restorer Gavin King and his company Concours.

In quite a concise video we get a glimpse of the ongoing projects in their workshop, seeing the very early restoration of a car initially before catching a peak of a few of the classic cars that Gavin and the team have already completed work on. It’s great to see this type of work going on as there’s a real art to bringing something to it’s former glory, every job must present it’s challenges thats for sure.

If I’m being completely honest I was pretty disappointed this didn’t go on for longer, I would have loved to see more of the actual process of a restoration but this is quite an enjoyable piece so I can’t really complain. In some respects this is a compliment to how enticing the film below is so hopefully Toby can take this on the chin and keep capturing such inspiring stories. He’s quite a young chap so I’d recommend checking back with him in the future over on Vimeo.

His choice of “heavy, monumental installations” over illustrations are inspired by his surroundings.

In the book, Lara Platman follows the production of Harris Tweed fabrics over the course of a year and along the way profiles many of the people who are involved in the process, from those raising and shearing the sheep, to those who inspect the final product before it’s shipped off to suppliers and designers. When I was finally able to sit down and go through it, I couldn’t help but think of my own Harris Tweed jackets and the work that went into them – likely many of craftsmen featured in the book could have worked on the very same fabrics that my jackets were made from.
Along with tweed fans, anyone in the industry who is in the business of selling Harris Tweed garments should have this book on hand. I don’t think there’s anything else quite like it that captures the entire production process into a single volume and presents it in such an appreciative way.
A few examples of the photography included in the book can be found through Platman’s photoshelter website and it can be easily ordered online through several sources.

If there is one machine in the current world of vintage style jeans that has the mystique of a fairly tale it’s the Union Special 43200G chainstitching machine. This is the machine the Japanese first scoured the world for starting in the 1980′s, they wanted them to place in their factories which reproduced vintage styles of American jeans from the 1950′s and before. It was a good twenty years until the rest of the world realized what was happening in Japan, by that time most of the 43200G machines had been bought up by the Japanese factories, brands, and retailers to put in their stores for in-store hemming.

Photographers from London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and New York contribute their snaps of cyclists from all walks of sartorial and bicycle style.
